Can You Use EBT For Grocery Delivery?

Many people have turned to grocery delivery as of late for its convenience and safety.

But can you use your EBT card to get your groceries delivered? Keep reading to find out.

Grocery delivery became hugely popular during the pandemic. It allowed customers to get the food they needed without leaving the house, which helped them social distance and hopefully steer clear of the coronavirus.

While grocery delivery can certainly be convenient, many EBT cardholders have wondered if they can use their food stamps to have items delivered to their door. If you were wondering the same, we’re about to reveal if and how it works.

EBT For Deliveries

EBT cardholders will be happy to know that you can now get your groceries delivered from certain stores that accept food stamps (aka SNAP benefits). However, before you start shopping online to get those goods delivered, there are some things you should know.

For starters, your SNAP benefits can only be used to pay for the actual groceries themselves. In other words, you’ll have to pay for any delivery fees, tips, etc., out of pocket. And beyond that restriction, your SNAP benefits can only be used to pay for eligible items. Luxuries such as alcohol, cigarettes, and some prepared foods are not included.

Since you have to pay for delivery fees out of pocket, your best bet is to get your online shopping done all at once instead of having several small deliveries. This will save you money on fees and tips, which is crucial since food costs are going up. To ensure you skip unnecessary deliveries, it’s best to plan ahead and shop online with a list.

Also, even though shopping online and getting your groceries delivered is convenient, you may find better deals when buying items in person. But when you factor in the high cost of fuel nowadays, those better in-person deals may not be so great if you have to drive to the store.

Where To Use EBT For Grocery Delivery

One of the most popular grocery delivery services is Instacart. Use the service to buy from the following stores, and you can use your EBT card to pay for the groceries:

  • ALDI
  • Food Lion
  • FoodMaxx
  • Hannaford
  • Lucky Supermarkets
  • Market 32
  • Market Bistro
  • Piggly Wiggly
  • Price Chopper
  • Publix
  • Save Mart

Before placing your first Instacart order, check with the company to make sure EBT is still accepted for your store of choice. And if you’re worried about paying for delivery fees, know that Instacart is offering free deliveries on your first three SNAP orders over $35.

Beyond Instacart, you can also use EBT for grocery delivery on Amazon.com in all states except Louisiana, Hawaii, Montana, and Alaska. The same holds true for using any Pandemic EBT benefits (P-EBT) through the online service.

Lastly, Walmart has announced that they are accepting food stamps for grocery delivery in all states except for Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Maine, and Montana. However, those locations could get added in the future.
