Confused About EBT Cards And SNAP? Read This

There’s no doubt that getting SNAP benefits on an EBT card can help your family’s nutrition and finances. But since you may not know how it all works, here’s a quick guide to help you out.

Have you heard of food stamps? You probably have. And while many still use that name, food stamps are now officially referred to as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).

With SNAP, low-income families get help buying nutritious food. In the past, this was achieved through paper vouchers sent in the mail. Now, everything is electronic, which is more convenient, but also more confusing if you’ve never had an EBT card before.

What Is EBT?

EBT stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer. It’s a card that looks and works like an ATM card. You swipe it at the store when checking out, which pays for your items.

What items can you buy with EBT? We’ll discuss that and more so you get a better understanding of how SNAP works.

How Do You Get an EBT Card?

Since an EBT card gets loaded with SNAP benefits each month, you’ll first need to apply to the program. The application process includes offering information on your finances and completing an interview to confirm your eligibility. Provided you meet income requirements and other SNAP qualifications, you will be approved and receive your EBT card in the mail.

How Long Does It Take to Get Approved for SNAP?

The approval process depends on your location. Some people receive EBT benefits within a week, while others get them within 30 days of applying for SNAP.

Can You Use an EBT Card at Any Store?

Your EBT card cannot be used at every single store, but you will have plenty of options. Familiar places that accept EBT cards include grocery stores, gas stations, and convenience stores. Some stores like Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, and Target may also accept EBT. And in some cases, you can even buy fresh fruits and veggies from farmers’ markets using your EBT card.

If you’re unsure whether a place accepts EBT, check the door for a sign or ask an employee. Even better, you can use the SNAP Retailer Locator to find out beforehand.

What About Online Purchases? Can You Use Your EBT Card for Those?

The majority of states now accept EBT online purchases. Check with your SNAP office once you receive your EBT card to see if your state is one of them.

What Can You Buy With SNAP Benefits?

You can use your EBT card to buy nutritional necessities like meat, poultry, fish, dairy, bread, rice, cereal, fruits, vegetables, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, desserts, spices, condiments, etc. Prepared food is usually not allowed. Household supplies, alcohol, tobacco products, health/beauty products, vitamins, supplements, medication, and live animals are not allowed.

Can You Use an EBT Card Out of State?

Using your EBT card while traveling is usually okay, unless you’re in Puerto Rico. However, if you move to a different state, you will need to reapply for SNAP through that local office.

How Can You Check Your SNAP Balance?

On the back of your EBT card, there should be a number to call. Use that to see your SNAP balance. Some states also have apps or portals for viewing balances.
