New Government Program Offers $30 Discount On Internet Service

Do you want to make your current internet plan more affordable? Then keep reading, as there’s a new government program that awards a $30 monthly discount on your bill.

What would you eliminate if you had to cut back on some bills to make room in your budget? You could get rid of things like eating out so often and some forms of entertainment, but one bill that would have to stay is your Internet service.

Why? Because you probably use it for various purposes, such as work, school, online shopping, communicating with friends and family, entertainment, and nowadays, even healthcare with virtual doctor appointments via video chat.

While you know how essential the Internet is to your household, the government has come to realize the same, which is why it recently announced the launch of the Affordable Connectivity Program.

What Is The Affordable Connectivity Program?

The ACP replaces the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program. Launched in April 2021 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EBB sought to make Internet service more accessible for struggling families. It achieved that goal by offering a $50 discount on monthly Internet service ($75 for families living on Tribal lands). While helpful, the BBB’s end was set for March 1, 2022. But instead of leaving an accessibility gap for low-income families who need Internet service, the ACP stepped in as a permanent replacement.

Thanks to a whopping $14 billion investment, the Affordable Connectivity Program is here to stay. With it, qualifying households can enjoy a $30 monthly discount on their Internet service, or $75 if you live on Tribal lands. As a bonus, you can also enjoy a one-time discount of $100 towards the purchase of a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from a participating provider so you or your kids can take advantage of your cheaper Internet connection.

How To Qualify For The Affordable Connectivity Program

In a perfect world, the ACP would be available to all households. However, that is not the case, as you will have to qualify by showing your household has a financial need. How can you show this? For starters, you could prove that your household income is below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. There are even easier ways to qualify, though.

Do you currently receive government assistance? If you’re a recipient of SNAP, SSI, Medicaid, WIC, or live in federal public housing, that could be enough to help you qualify for the ACP. Do your children participate in the School Breakfast Program or the National School Lunch Program? Did you or someone in your household receive a Federal Pell Grant this year?
Is someone a Lifeline (discounted phone service) recipient? Any of those could help you qualify for the ACP as well.
